Arrancó estudio sobre condiciones químico-ambientales del archipiélago de Los Roques

El Centro de Estudios Ecotoxicológicos en Sistemas Marinos, Cetoxmar, de la Universidad Simón Bolívar obtuvo, a través de un concurso internacional, un financiamiento de la empresa japonesa Mitsui para realizar un proyecto de monitoreo ambiental de los arrecifes del Parque Nacional Los Roques. La investigación, ya en marcha y que culminará en dos años, recibió para su desarrollo por parte de Mitsui, un monto que asciende a los 92.295 dólares. La USB accedió a estos recursos a través de un concurso que realiza la empresa a nivel mundial para financiar proyectos ambientales. El proyecto de Cetoxmar fue el único escogido por la región de América Latina. La profesora Elia García, directora de Cetoxmar, informó que el proyecto consiste en el levantamiento de las condiciones químico-ambientales del archipiélago de Los Roques, estudio que no se ha realizado con anterioridad, y establecer los posibles impactos que pudieran generar en el futuro los bloques de exploración de gas costa afuera que se llegaran a colocar en sus cercanías. Cetoxmar fue creado en 2008 por la Universidad Simón Bolívar con la misión de implementar nuevas tecnologías para el desarrollo del país y de sus empresas, en el área prioritaria del petróleo, gas y ambiente.

Tiene la capacidad de realizar monitoreos ambientales con técnicas químicas, bioquímicas y moleculares; ensayos de toxicidad y biodegradación (TIE); estudios de riesgo ecológico ambiental (ERA); transferencia tecnológica en saneamiento y remediación; generación de información base para la normativa nacional de exploración y explotación costa afuera; definición de áreas de sensibilidad y protección ambiental; análisis estadístico e interpretación de data; formación de talento en el área de petróleo y gas; y diseño de cursos especializados. Los investigadores que forman parte de este Centro son: Elia García, directora general y coordinadora del proyecto en Los Roques; los investigadores David Bone, Carolina Bastidas y los posdoctorantes Ruth Ramos, Aldo Cróquer y Antonio Herrera. También asistirán el decano de Investigación y Desarrollo, José Luis Paz, y el presidente de Funindes, Roberto Réquiz.
